Internal Accountability

Internal Accountability is a department normally under Corporate Finance that deals with conducting charter audits, CAFF Grant filings, and conducting internal investigations regarding finances. Internal Accountability is unique in the aspect that it directly interacts with both the charters and the board in the event that a charter's finances are brought into question. Questions and inquiries regarding specific CAFF Grant information, Charter Audits, and charter summons requests can be found with this department.

What does IA look for in Audits?

Internal Accountability is always looking for a holistic view of SAU charters. Expenses, fundraisers, donations, transfers, anything that involves the use your cash is something IA wants to be able to see from your financial statements!

Red Flags for Charter Audits

Charter audits are always as in-depth as possible, but at the end of the day, we can only see what you turn in. Because of this, we're always on the look out for a couple of different details that might set off a red flag. Always make sure that your financial statements are:

Complete and match your ASB account snapshot comparison
Well documented and organized
Connected to minutes and expense reports
Are accurately separated and accounted for (especially CAFF funds)

There's also some details that if we notice, may trigger further questioning like:

A transfer from your ASB trust account to another unrelated ASB trust account
Expenses without student approvals recorded
Excessive expenses compared to fundraising
Balances below $100 after CAFF Grant
Excessive expenses made by students that are not reimbursed

Insolvency policy for charters:

Although SAUs are funded yearly by our non-profit, in the event that a charter fails to meet the operational costs paid out for the year, or is expected to, our organization wants to ensure that students will be able to conduct their business without interruption. Student Advocacy Union Inc. is prepared to meet 100% of demonstrated operational costs for a charter up to a period of 1 fiscal year and the conversion of their status from a Type A charter to a Type B charter.
